How to Calculate Income Tax – Step by Step
Example: ₹12,00,000 annual income.
Choose either the New Tax Regime or Old Tax Regime.
The applicable standard deduction is considered for eligible salary/pension income.
Gross income is reduced by applicable deductions.
The taxable income is divided across the applicable tax slabs. Each slab is taxed at its applicable rate.
If the taxpayer satisfies the applicable conditions, eligible rebate is deducted from income tax.
Surcharge may apply when taxable income crosses specified thresholds.
The calculator applies 4% cess to applicable income tax and surcharge.
The calculator shows estimated tax, effective tax rate and income remaining after estimated income tax.
Example: ₹12 Lakh Income Under New Regime
Suppose an eligible resident individual has salary income of ₹12,00,000 for FY 2025-26.
- Gross salary = ₹12,00,000
- New-regime standard deduction = ₹75,000
- Taxable income = ₹12,00,000 − ₹75,000 = ₹11,25,000
- Applicable tax slabs are then applied.
- The eligible Section 87A rebate is considered.
- Applicable cess is then calculated.
This illustrates why a calculator must consider deductions and rebates instead of simply multiplying total salary by a single tax rate.

What is an income tax calculator?
An income tax calculator estimates your tax liability using income, deductions, age, residential status and the applicable tax regime.
What is the new tax regime for AY 2026-27?
The AY 2026-27 New Tax Regime uses slabs beginning with nil tax up to ₹4 lakh, followed by 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% rates.
What is Section 87A rebate?
Section 87A provides an income-tax rebate to eligible resident individual taxpayers subject to the applicable income limits and conditions.
What is Health & Education Cess?
Health & Education Cess is calculated at 4% of applicable income tax plus surcharge.
Which is better: Old or New Tax Regime?
It depends on your income, deductions, exemptions and financial circumstances. Use the comparison feature above to estimate both regimes.
Does age affect income tax?
Age can affect the basic exemption structure under the Old Tax Regime. The New Tax Regime does not use the same age-based slab structure.
Does this calculate my exact salary take-home?
No. The result is an income-tax estimate. Actual salary credited to your bank account may also be affected by EPF, professional tax, insurance, employer deductions, TDS adjustments and other payroll items.
Is this an official government calculator?
No. This is an independent calculator for estimation and educational purposes. Always verify the final liability against the applicable law and official Income Tax Department resources.
Can this calculator calculate capital gains?
Not comprehensively. Capital gains and other special-rate income can have separate tax rules. A professional-grade calculator should calculate those categories separately.
